On Misinformation by Media
Condemning false propaganda by the media, state, and PDRM

We, the undersigned pro-Palestinian organisations, condemn the misinformation by Malaysian mainstream media including Bernama, Free Malaysia Today, Harian Metro, The Sun, and The Star who have falsely reported on our fellow comrade and organiser 'Nama' as having allegedly hurt a participant during the Global Sumud Flotilla rally on the 2nd of October 2025, at the US Embassy organised by Malaysia Protest for Palestine.

As organisations involved with the protest, as well as post-arrest coordination for Nama, we state that the individual who claimed to be hurt, Muhamad Hafizi Nooraldin, was not a peaceful participant in the GSF rally, but a plainclothed police officer who purposefully instigated violence at the peaceful protest, as evidenced by videos published by actual protest participants and organisers.

The conduct of the police officers that day endangered a peaceful protest primarily led by ordinary civilians, including the elderly, women, and young people. The police failed to facilitate the protestors' demands to be allowed near the US Embassy, pushing protestors onto a busy road with moving traffic. Police officers fomented the chaotic conditions which led to the scuffle, resulting in the unlawful detention of two pro-Palestine activists, 'Nama' and Kamal, who had only been attempting to de-escalate the situation and prevent police — including the aforementioned plain-clothed officer — from physically shoving innocent participants.

The lead organisers behind the GSF rally, Malaysia Protest for Palestine, have made the following clear: "This blatant distortion of reality pushed by the media is abhorrent and disgusting. Even more deplorable is the length by which PDRM took to protect the embassy of a genocide-complicit country. They were willing to break Standard Operation Procedures, violate Malaysian citizens' constitutional rights, and cause physical harm to Pro-Palestine protestors. This begs the question - where does our media, PDRM, and by extension, our government, really stand in the Palestine-Israel issue?"

Today, the state has charged 'Nama' under Penal Code Section 323 on accusations of having hurt said officer amidst the scuffle, despite the clearly documented role of the police in instigating the violence, turning the peaceful protest into chaos.

We reaffirm that these charges are motivated attempts to crackdown on pro-Palestinian activism which challenges the US imperial empire, attempting to distract the public from the Malaysian government's complicity with the US backers of the genocide in Palestine.

We recognise that the police are part and parcel of the broader systems of state violence and oppression used to serve the interests of the ruling class, while stamping down on the voices of the everyday Malaysian rakyat.

As Malaysian citizens, we have a right to peaceful protest, which we will continue to exercise, despite the state's intimidation.

It is the duty of the justice system to uphold these rights and ensure that the heavy handedness that we have witnessed from the authorities is dealt with.

It is the duty of the media to ensure that facts are accurately published and that the public is correctly informed.

We have done our part, it's time that the systems that be do theirs too.
